Bonfire Night- A Great Reason to Give Away Cash
One of the benefits of blogging in the personal finance realm has been “meeting” people from all over the globe and learning we are all different but very much the same, at least in financial thinking anyway. I love learning about holidays celebrated in other countries, and I love giveaways, so thanks to Graham at Moneystepper, today we are learning about Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes Night that is celebrated mainly in Great Britain.
Guy Fawkes was a member of the Gunpowder Plot, which was an attempt to blow up the House of Lords and kill King James I. Mr. Fawkes must not have been the best plotter because he was arrested on November 5, 1605 while guarding the stash of explosives. Everyone was so happy that the king was not blown up, they decided to celebrate with bonfires. Nothing like some good pyromania!
Over the years, the holiday turned into a religious mess with Catholics and Protestants arguing over burning popes in effigies. I kind of got lost in understanding that period. Can’t we all just get along?
By the 20th century, everyone got over themselves, and the holiday pretty much stopped with religious and political stuff. Now Bonfire Night is usually observed with fireworks and public celebrations. Funny how some of our most popular holidays started with violence and mayhem!
