20/20 Posts of the Week-A Crash and a Recovery

Ridgway State Park bike trailWe had a great camping trip last weekend. Our favorite campground is in a state park that is connected to the town of Ridgway, CO by a four mile paved bike trail. When our six year old was little, we used to pull her in the bike trailer, but this year she was able to ride the trail on her own.

It did take us 40 minutes and a promise of ice cream to go four miles, but that’s not the point. What is even better is that the weekend before, she had a huge bike crash and cut her head pretty badly. Thank goodness for helmets or it could have been a disaster. I was really proud that she got back on the bike and made it to town. I bet next year we will be keeping up with her, and we are very close to being able to mountain bike as a family.

When you have kids, people assume that you have to give things up, and it’s true, but not like you’d think. I have added so many things, that I don’t have time to miss the stuff I don’t do much anymore, like mountain bike. After a point, though, you kind of get your old life back with a new person to share it with. It’s pretty sweet. I hope I haven’t forgotten how to trail ride myself!

  1. Hey Kim, great roundup here! Thanks for mentioning me…I really appreciate it! Hmmm…the furthest I’ve ridden my bike in a week must be a few miles. I’ve never really been a big bike rider…just used it to get around as a kid. Anyway, I’ll see you around, thanks again!

  2. I’ve been walking up and down a side street with the girls so that they can practice riding their bikes. It looks like it won’t be long until the training wheels can come off for my oldest!

  3. What a brave little girl, you must be so proud. I often see parents here traveling with little kids and little backpacks and the kids love it, the apple never falls far from the tree, and if you love something the kids will too. I wanted to buy a bike this week, really miss it and I don’t think I have a huge future with running. The longest I rode is about 1,000 miles from Guatemala City to Cancun Mexico in 20 days it was awesome.

  4. Wow, glad she’s ok that must have hurt. We never used to wear a helmet when I was a kid but certainly we can see the benefits. I don’t ride a bike these days as I tend to run. Have a great weekend Kim

    1. You never know when you might find a good one for free or at a yard sale, so stay on the lookout! Have a great weekend as well.

  5. Wow, brave girl! I love your point about losing some things when you have kids but gaining others. It’s so true. And thanks for the shout out. Hope you guys enjoy the rest of your weekend.
