Five Things That Are Cheaper to Buy in Fall

things on sale this fall

If Labor Day is the official end of the summer season, that means fall is just around the corner. It’s hard to believe we are closing in on the last part of the year, but I do enjoy fall better than any season. Changing seasons can also be a great time to take advantage of discounts, especially on these five things that are cheaper to buy in fall.

Landscaping Tools and Plants

Fall is a great time for landscaping, even better than spring in some areas of the country. Plant roots grow anytime the soil temperature is above 40 degrees, so even after frost, roots continue to take hold. By fall, weeds have gone dormant and won’t be in competition with new plants or trees.

The other great thing about fall landscaping is that garden centers and nursery prices are at rock bottom. The selection might not be as robust as in spring, but what they do have will be deeply discounted. We recently picked up four new rose bushes at $6 each plus bags of mulch at $3 a piece. With my free DIY gardening skills, I gave the front yard a much needed makeover for under $50.

Fall is also the best time to buy lawn mowers and garden tools. Stores need to make room for shovels and ginormous blow up Christmas decorations, so the yard stuff has to go.

Outdoor Furniture

It’s very tempting to want patio furniture as soon as it goes on display in the spring, but if you can hold out until fall, it’s usually half off. Again, the selection might not be vast, but you can’t beat the prices. As we were picking out our roses, we noticed that all the remaining outdoor furniture was 60% off.

Grills

Obviously, the fall sales trend is to clear out summer merchandise, and grills go right along with landscaping and outdoor furniture. If you cook food and have space for a grill, I highly recommend one. Grilling is a great way to make just about anything taste good. It’s quick and generally not as messy as cooking on a stovetop.

We probably use our grill three times a week or more, year round. If we didn’t have it, I think we would eat out much more often. Buying a grill at full price might be worth it, but it gets even sweeter if you can buy now and get half off!

Local Produce

There is nothing better than home grown produce, and right now is harvest time in many places. Buying local is not only good for the economy, but it’s usually more healthy and often cheaper than what you’d find at a chain grocery or big box store. My grocery bill has been higher the last couple of months due to buying produce, but I also have a freezer full of yummy fruits and veggies that we’ll use over the next several months.

Stocks

Even if we ignore the recent stock market downturn, September is historically the worst month for stocks. While many people are scared of buying when the market is down, smart investors see downturns as an opportunity to buy stocks on sale. We all want to be smart investors, right?

Take a look at your goals for the year, and see where you stand. If you haven’t invested as much as you wanted, now is a great time, especially if you are in the market as a long term investor and won’t need the money for at least ten years.

Mindful Spending Year Round

Even if it is cheaper to buy in fall, always make sure to practice mindful spending. Don’t get tricked into buying things you don’t need because of a sale. However, if you are in the market for summer closeouts, good food, or adding to your investment portfolio, fall might be the best time to take advantage.
