History
The founder, Colonel Harland Sanders, started selling fried chicken in Corbin, Kentucky, during the Great Depression period. He identified that a chicken franchise was severely needed. He brought his idea into life and opened the first KFC in 1952 in Utah.
KFC was getting popular amongst the people. It was challenging the market of hamburgers. As a result, rapid expansions started happening, and in no time, KFC was all over the United States. In 1964, Colonel Harland sold the franchise to John Y. Brown Jr. and Jack C. Massey.
By the mid-1960s, KFC was one of the first American fast-food chains that expanded internationally. KFC was introduced in Canada, the United Kingdom, Mexico, and Jamaica. The period between the 1970s and 1980s was rough for KFC. A lot of mishaps were experienced as KFC went through changes in ownership.
The chain continued to spread its territory overseas. In 1987, KFC became the first Western restaurant chain to open in China. Pressure-fried chicken pieces with 11 herbs & spices is KFC’s original product. The idea was serving chicken in cardboard bucket was first introduced by Pete Harman in 1957.
Since the early 1990s, KFC has expanded its menu. Now they serve other chicken products like chicken fillet sandwiches, wraps, and more. Salads, coleslaw, and side-dishes of KFC also have a huge fan-following.

Today, there are over 44,000 KFC restaurants in 135 countries. The Yum! Brands system that owns KFC opens over six new restaurants per day on average. Yum! Brands own popular chains like KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, etc.
The founder, Harland Sanders, wasn’t a Colonel before his contributions to the state’s cuisine sector. After gaining popularity, Ruby Laffon, the governor of Kentucky, made him an honorary Colonel. That’s why we know him as Colonel Harland Sanders.

First, fried chicken sold by Harland Sanders wasn’t in a KFC location. It was called Sanders Court & Cafe, which was located out of the front of the gas station, which Colonel operated. The secret receipt of 11 herbs and spices by Harland is still out there, and you can purchase it! Although it’s not an original receipt, 99-X is a worthy substitute by Marion-Kay Spices. Bill Summers of Marion-Kay Spices was asked by Colonel to re-create his recipe.
