History
Back in 1883, Barney Kroger opened a grocery store at 66 Pearl Street in downtown Cincinnati with his life savings of $372. Since the start, Barney focused on one thing that, “Never sell anything you would not want yourself”. Who would have known that this motto will change the life of Barney Kroger? Back in the 1900s, almost every grocery bought their bread from independent bakeries. Kroger was thinking something different. As he always has been a sucker of quality as the key ingredient of profit, he started to think of changing the stereotypes. He became the first grocer in the country who established his own bakeries. Furthermore, he was also the first every grocer to sell meats and groceries under one roof. Profit was increasing and people were liking the idea put forward by Barney Kroger. As a matter of fact, the grocery business started by Kroger was booming.
Keeping the core values in mind, Barney Kroger started to think of manufacturing the products he had been selling. Kroger implemented this idea in the first store that was located at Pearl St. He bought the cabbage from farmers and took it to his mother’s home. Kroger’s mother turned the cabbages into tangy sauerkraut with her special recipe. This idea attracted a huge amount of German customers to the Kroger store. Therefore, today we see that Kroger operates 40 food processing facilities that manufacture thousands of products like bread, cookies, milk, ice cream and you name it. As a matter of fact, nearly half of 14,400 private-label items at Kroger are made at one of 40 food processing facilities ran by Kroger Company. As Kroger owns a lot of other companies, the biggest merger in Kroger’s history came in 1999, Kroger teamed up with Fred Meyer.
