History
1860 was the year where it all started for Shaw’s Supermarkets. This store chain is one of the oldest continuously-operated supermarkets in the United States. George Clinton Shaw opened the first retail grocery store in May 1860 at 285 Middle Street in Portland, Maine.
In the beginning, the small grocery store of George Clinton Shaw stocked 100 items. The majority of the items weren’t available from local farmers. Mainer Maynard A. Davis moved to Massachusetts in 1919 and found a group of grocery stores. The stores were located in Brockton & New Bedford areas under the name of Brockton Public Markets or BPM stores.
In late 1919, Davis purchased the George C. Shaw Company of Portland, Maine, and decided to operate the two grocery stores independently. Over the past 150 years, Shaw’s has been providing quality products & unparalleled service based on their core values.
